15 ways to beat up on those winter blues!
It’s that time of year again WINTER!
Many of us have it in our heads that winter sucks! It’s cold and windy and wet and we’re often stuck indoors. For most of us, much of this is to do with our own mindset and our negative thoughts around winter. It’s cold, it rains, wind blows, days are too short, can’t get outside much, hardly any sun, harder to exercise, eating stodgy food to keep warm – the list goes on! If we can just tweak our thoughts a bit and make the most of the positive, fun stuff of winter, we will have a much happier and easier time! So, I thought of creating a list of fun things to do, to pull us out of the winter doldrums and help us enjoy the differences winter can bring rather that dread it!
So, here are my top 15 fun and inspiring ideas to help you conquer those wintery blues, appreciate winter and enjoy the benefits.
Rug up and get outside! Even a half hour walk every day will help you feel more energised and warm. Fresh air is an amazing tonic.
Keep warm! There is nothing worse than suffering being cold, so, wear plenty of layers, warm sox and woolly scarves when you go out. Light the fire or heater so you’re cosy at home.
Grab sunlight! Most people know that sunlight provides us with Vitamin D. But did you know that it also improves your mood? Lack of sunlight can cause many people to become depressed without knowing why! Similar to exercise, sunlight exposure releases neurotransmitters in the brain that affect mood. So whenever you can, when the sun is shining, get outside and soak it up!
Let natural light and warmth in. Open up all your curtains every day and when it’s warm enough, open windows and doors. There’s nothing like a burst of fresh air to boost your energy levels.
Stretch your body. Take up yoga or just do simple stretching exercises at home. Get the whole family doing it with you and make it fun!
Eat yum winter foods! . Embrace and love the wholesome, warming foods that nature provides us in the winter. Soups simmering on the stove, hearty casseroles and warming spicy dishes are what winter is about.
Meet friends for coffee, or have them over to yours. Bake a batch of muffins and your home will smell delicious!
Play cards or board games. Get the family or a bunch of friends around for an afternoon of games on a wintery day.
Make mulled wine. Great to sip on a cold wintery evening, or in the afternoon while playing cards!
Read a book. There is nothing like getting lost in a good book when you are stuck inside
Get lots of sleep. Go to bed early if you feel like it. Winter is a time for rejuvenation so some extra sleep will benefit your body and your mind..
Relaxation, especially in the form of yoga, can alleviate stress and leave you with a calm energy. Mental exercises like meditation and positive thinking can help to keep you feeling calm and motivated
Laugh. A lot! Every day! As Victor Hughes wrote “Laughter is the sun that drives winter away from the human face”.
Write some new goals or a vision for yourself. Check out my blog ‘Creating a Vision Board’. Get creative and inspire yourself!
Treat yourself. Having something to look forward to can keep anyone motivated. Winter seems endless! But if you plan something exciting, your mood improves when you’re anticipating it and when the event actually comes. Plan something that’s exciting to you—a weekend trip, a day at the spa, a get together with friends, or special event like a play, girls (or guys) night out, or sporting event.
Hopefully some of these ideas will boost your wintery blues and spark up life a bit until Spring appears. Stay positive and be grateful.
